Places to Visit in Madagascar

Madagascar is a gem with a great combination of pristine beaches, spectacular landscapes, verdant forests and the unique lemurs. Ranked as the 5th largest island in the world, Madagascar is made of 144 million acres of something for everyone. 

Those interested in watersports can explore the white sand beaches while nature and wildlife enthusiasts can navigate the rainforests. With a number of UNESCO world heritage sites, Madagascar also satisfies the historians and conservationists.

1. Antananarivo

Antananarivo is the capital of Madagascar. The place reflects a combination of culture as well as French and Parisian infrastructure offering distinct experiences. Some of the places to explore here inclu Ambohimanga, Rova, and Musée Andafiavaratra

2. Avenue Of The Baobabs

Avenue of the Baobabs is a phenomenon of tall trees lining up a dirt road between Belon’i Tsiribihina and Morondava on the western side of the island. Locally known as  Renala, translated, ‘Queens of the forest,’ the estimated 30 meters tall Baobab trees attract the attention of many tourists. 

3. Tsingy Of Bemaraha

Tsingy Of Bemaraha is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of spiked and huge rocks that formed limestones. The park is composed of beautiful landscapes that consist of huge monoliths and fossil deposits. Locally, the limestones are referred to as Tsingies, hence the name of the park. This national park is located in Melaky Region, northwest of Madagascar. 

  1. Ranomafana National Park

Located in the southeastern region of Madagascar in Haute Matsiatra and Vatovavy, Ranomafana national park spreads across an area of 400 kms. Sq that are home to  home to rare species of flora and fauna. Some of them include the Milne-Edwards sifaka, lemur species ( golden bamboo lemur, the greater bamboo lemur, black and white ruffed lemur) and over 130 species of frogs among others. The word Ranomafana is translated  ‘hot water’ from the local language. This therefore means that tourists can enjoy a relaxed bath under hot running water from any of the park’s waterfalls.

5. Zahamena National Park

Established in 1997, Zahamena National Park covers an area of  an estimated 423 square kilometers of extraordinary scenery. The park’s rainforests ecosystems are home to13 species of lemurs that include: the Aye-aye,  the Black-and-White ruffed lemur, the Diademed sifaka, the Hairy-eared mouse lemur, the Babakoto and six kinds of various fat-tailed and mouse lemurs. Apart from these,there’s over 112 species of birds, 50 reptiles and over 60 amphibian species. 

6. Masoala National Park

Masoala National Park is located in northeast Madagascar, predominantly in the Sava Region and a part of it in Analanjirofo. The park was established in 1997,protecting  2,300 square kilometers of rainforest and 100 square kilometres of marine ecosystems. Masoala is the largest of Madagascar’s protected areas, being home to rare species like the Falanouc, Tomato frogs and leaf-tailed geckos. The marine parks in the areas provide a perfect resort for the water sport enthusiasts since it offers activities like snorkeling and kayaking. The park has high levels of biodiversity, with species like the  greater hedgehog tenrec, aye aye, white-fronted brown lemur, eastern fork-marked lemur, weasel sportive lemur, fosas, chameleons and Uroplatus geckos among others. 

7. Isalo National Park

The exceptional beauty of this national park makes it one of the ideal places to explore in Madagascar. It is located between Toliara and Fianarantsoa, in the Ihorombe Region of Madagascar, in the southwestern corner of the Province of Fianarantsoa. Isalo consists of several waterfalls and rock plateaus. The most popular place in the park is the natural pool located west of the park. Wildlife in Isalo is not as numerous in comparison to other parks. However, Isalo offers outstanding chances to spot the Verreaux’s Sifakas along the streams

  1. Ifaty and Tulear

This is a beach nestled in the southwestern coast of the Island. Settled in the vicinity of Tulear, the 5th largest city of Madagascar, the beach offers insights of the local’s lifestyles and some of the best seafood. You can also do catamaran tours, do community visits to reed villages and some water sports like snorkeling. 

9. Nosy Be

Nosy Be is located at the north-coast of the island. The place is underlined by several beaches that are perfect for many honeymooners, vacationers and several adventurers among others. Several watersports are done here, including snorkeling and scuba-diving among others. 

10. Nosy Boraha

Nosy Boraha is also known as Sainte Marie Island. The white sand beach is located on the eastern coast of Madagascar. The spectacular view is a combination of the palms lining the shores as well as the lapis lazuli lagoons.
