Additional information

The National currency of Uganda is the Uganda Shilling (UGX). Shillings can be withdrawn from ATMs in Kampala, Entebbe and cities and towns all around the country. There are lots of Foreign exchange bureaus in Kampala and other towns of Uganda as well. The US dollar is the country’s most preferred foreign currency though Pounds and Euros (and others) can also be exchanged into Ugandan Shillings. If you decide to carry foreign currency in cash for exchange, we advise that you carry 50 & 100 dollar bills rather than smaller notes. 50 & 100 dollar bills fetch a higher exchange of approximately UGX 3600 per dollar while the small dollar bills are exchanged for as low as UGX 3000 only per dollar. Please note that US Dollar bills older than 2013 will not be accepted. Most lodges and hotels except both UGX and USD, however, small change in USD might be scarce. Most lodges over credit card payment as well, though sometimes reception of the point-of-sell machines in remote areas is a problem

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Uganda is during the dry season when the animals are moving in large numbers in search for pastures and water for drinking. However, rainy seasons attract cheaper rates and are less crowded thus offering great experiences to travelers as well.

Wildlife

Uganda has 18783 species of fauna and flora. It has over 50% of the world’s population of mountain gorillas. It has over 1901 species of birds, which is over 50% of the Africa’s bird richness. It has 7 of 18 plant kingdoms of Africa. It has over 600 species of fish and the highest population of chimpanzees in Kibale National Park. All these find home in Uganda’s National Parks, reserves and Important Bird Areas.

Travelling around

If you are visiting a number of parks and reserves in Uganda, you can either fly or drive between them. Roads inside most of the parks areas are not the best conditions and unmarked, making self-driving very difficult. Ellington Safaris will supply you with a driver guide alternatively, you can fly to your destination and utilize a car and driver supplied by the company within the parks. In other parts of Uganda, towns and cities are linked by  buses and taxis.

Climate and weather

Uganda has beautiful weather and her citizens are very proud of it. The national anthem speaks of Uganda as ‘the land that feeds us by sun, and fertile soils’. Located in the Great Lakes region, the country’s weather and climate is regulated by its abundant water bodies, forest cover, and the Equator. Western Uganda is the wettest and coolest region due to the thick forests and mountain ranges. Northeastern Uganda is the driest region with a semi-arid climate caused by the warm north eastern winds blowing from the Ethiopian highlands. There are generally two rainy seasons in the country; March to May, and mid-September to November. There are also two dry seasons. December to February (the main dry season) & June to mid-September (the mini-dry season). But the temperatures are always high regardless of the seasons.
